Tacoma Area Literacy Council

Who We Are

TALC's vision is to be a recognized leader providing high-quality learner-centered adult literacy instruction. TALC was founded in 1968 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1995. We are an affiliate of ProLiteracy, the largest literacy organization in the U.S. Our program is designed to meet the needs and goals of adults and to provide the reading and comprehension skills necessary to deal with everyday life.

What We Do

The Tacoma Area Literacy Council (TALC) is a non-profit volunteer organization that provides FREE one-to-one and classroom tutoring in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learner (ELL) to adult learners (18 years and older) in Pierce County, Washington. Training is provided to adult volunteers; no previous teaching experience is necessary. Tutor training is offered in spring and fall; our website provides more details on exact dates.  Tutors and learners meet at convenient times in a public location or may meet virtually using an online application. Lessons are confidential and goal oriented. Support is ongoing.
