Volunteer: Lister Elementary Read2Me Tutor

The Read2Me Tutor is a volunteer position that is dedicated to Tacoma Community House’s mission of creating opportunities for immigrants and other community members in the Puget Sound region through comprehensive services focused on self-sufficiency, inclusion and advocacy.

Read2Me volunteers are trained tutors and mentors that are matched with a Kindergarten-3rd grade student striving to meet grade level reading. They meet weekly during the school day with a site coordinator to work on reading skills to help him or her gain confidence and ability so that she or he is better able to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

 Commitment:

1-2 days/week 45 minutes/week October through May

Duties:

Tutor one student reading for 45 minutes once a week Help the students understand basic reading skills such as letter and sound recognition Support the reading techniques children learn in the classroom Complete and maintain weekly tracking sheet Commit to a scheduled tutoring session and arrive on time

Qualifications:

Patience and flexibility in working with children from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds Ability to follow through with volunteer commitments. Ability to communicate effectively (orally and written) in English, to follow procedures and to work in a teaching environment.
