Some cats need a break from living in a cage. Providing time in your home helps them get get ready to be adopted. Many cats need a quiet patch of sunlight to recover.

Can you help?

Newborn kittens are so small they need foster care until they're big enough to receive span/ neuter surgery.

Among the animals that are eligible to be fostered, you choose which animal that will go home with you.

Foster volunteers are given thorough training, great support and everything necessary-- free pet food, free medical care for the kitty, free litter, free litter box...

When the kitty is ready to be adopted, you may choose to:

a) Select who the animal will be adopted to following the Adopters Welcome rules, or

b) Bring the animal back to the shelter, or

c) Adopt the animal yourself You can decide when the time is right for you to foster-- on an ongoing basis or you can take breaks.

We are looking for passionate and enthusiastic volunteer board members to serve on Cares of Washington's board of directors.

The people we are looking for are diverse candidates that have lived experience and personally relevant backgrounds, and/or a professional background in one or more of the following areas: marketing, business development, training and healthcare are strongly encouraged to apply.

The responsibilities of a Cares board member are: 

The average time that a board member spends on Cares board activities is 5 hours a month, i.e. board meetings, work, strategic planning and representation.

Come support our residents with social and activity support! We are looking for people to come into our skilled nursing facility and assist with activities (call BINGO numbers, play piano, support art lessons, and more) or provide individual support (visiting a resident who can't leave their room, sitting and talking with resident, etc.). Volunteers will be able to have a flexible recurring or one time schedule. If you want to come in for an hour once a week or for an hour a day, we are happy to have the help.

We're looking for a sponsorship coordinator to reach out to local businesses to share information about our organization and discuss potential sponsorships for our events. If you like developing new relationships and being involved in the community, this would be a great position!

Volunteer Services of Pierce/Kitsap County offers "free" transportation to medical and essential appointments for seniors and people with disabilities.  These are individuals who do not qualify for a care giver or other means of transportation and assistance.  They depend on the kindness of our volunteers to get them to essential medical care.  An hour of your time will make a difference in someone's life!  

Volunteers use their own vehicles and are paid a mileage reimbursement, for all miles driven. Volunteers are also covered with an additional Liability insurance policy.  Our scheduling is done with a web based program allowing you to volunteer on YOUR time.

Paint Tacoma Beautiful is a program that provides free exterior painting to low income homeowners during the spring and summer months. Since 1985 Paint Tacoma Beautiful has mobilized volunteers to paint houses free of charge for more than 2,200 low income, elderly, and disabled homeowners across Pierce County. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to visually see the impact they are making, and build community. We look forward to this season being a time to experience the joy of being together while following CDC safety guidelines. Many of the homeowners who apply to our program often live in isolation due to age, disabilities, and other factors that limit them from leaving their homes and engaging with the community. This program is all about showing up for them and building connections across generations, neighborhood lines, and other identities that separate us

This position is an independent contractor and will be paid as such. The Living History Performer assists museum staff during school field trips, primarily providing groups of children with an educational and artistic performance that provides information on the Oregon Trail and/or life in 19th century Tacoma.

-Provide historical interpretation engaging students by using artifacts, storytelling, music, and/or dramatic performance to help school groups imagine daily life in the past. Performers may choose to portray various people and professions related to the Oregon Trail and/or historical residents of Tacoma.

-Manage time and class interaction responsibly. Most elementary students who visit the museum are in 3rd or 4th grade. Performances are generally 50-minutes each for groups of 20-50 students, plus their teachers and chaperones. Between one and three performances may be scheduled on the same day.

-Arrive in a timely manner for set up, remain for scheduled performance time, and clean up any items at the end of each field trip. Restore the performance space to its original condition and configuration following each field trip.

Just by being yourself, you can be a person that Girl Scouts can count on—the one who listens intently, who encourages them to chase their goals, who keeps them laughing, and who helps them feel confident in who they are. Together, you’ll build a community where every Girl Scout is celebrated and valued. 

You don't have to have a child of your own to get involved; all you need is a passion for mentoring the next generation of leaders.

Currently, girls in Pierce County are being placed on waitlists to participate in our leadership development program, because we do not have enough adult volunteers. Troop leaders and assistant leaders are needed to start new troops for girls ages 5-18 years in your neighborhood.

Love kids? Love books? Love to see kids reading books? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions than your hunt for the perfect volunteer gig is over! Page Ahead is   looking for volunteers to help at elementary schools we serve with our Book Up Summer program. In this program, schools hold book fairs in April – June, with books provided by Page Ahead. At these book fairs students, grades K – 2nd, will each self-select 12 brand new, free-to-them books, to take home and keep.

For many of these children, this will be the first book they own. We are in need of volunteers (3 – 4 per school) to help at the book fairs with various tasks in elementary schools across Washington State.

Become a reading/math mentor to 1st-5th grade children!  Our programs focus on helping struggling elementary school students increase their reading and math through one-on-one mentoring.  Mentors meet with their students once a week for the academic school year, forming an impactful bond that helps boost both academic and social emotional skills!  No special skills required...except love of children and literacy!  The openings are at the following schools in Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula:

Transportation is one of the greatest needs on the Key Peninsula, especially for seniors and adults with disabilities. The Mustard Seed Project desperately needs volunteer drivers to transport low-income seniors to doctor appointments and grocery shopping. Volunteering is a fantastic way to have a huge, positive impact for the community. Drivers use their personal vehicles and are reimbursed 51 cents per mile driven. 

For over 35 years, communities across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and take action for lifesaving change. Relay For Life is a movement, a community of like-minded survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer. There are many ways you can get involved and support our Relay mission and support the work of the American Cancer Society. Relay volunteers help with registration, logistics, participant support, and other unique opportunities based on the needs of the event.

The Relay For Life of Tacoma-Puget Sound Event Leadership Committee are looking for volunteers who are interested in joining the Leadership Team members help plan and promote the event. They ensure everything is organized, from recruiting and motivating teams and sponsors to planning day-of-event ceremonies, virtual ceremonies, and alternative celebrations. We are seeking individuals to lead and support roles such as our event Ceremonies, Experiences, Luminaria, Marketing, and overall Community Engagement and Recruitment. The 2024 Relay For Life of Tacoma-Puget Sound will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2023 from 10AM to 10PM at Mt. Tahoma High School in Lakewood.

A Volunteer program requires many forms and updates to be completed.  Our Program Coordinator is looking for someone to help her get the filing completed, binders made and phone calls for references of new volunteers completed.  There is always something to do and you would not be bored!

The PORT is Tacoma Coffee Oasis's Drop-in Center. We aim to support teens and young adults that are expeinceing homelessness or are at risk for it. We provide many recourse that are not limited to; showers, laundry, food, case management, life skills classes and more. 

We are looking for volunteers to spend 3 hours shifts in the drop in we ask for at least once a month. When volunteering you may be keeping the shower system moving, helping people get food or hygiene items, you may be teaching someone how to do their own laundry, you may also be playing games and laughing with youth and you may help supporting a teen on a really tough day. We ask for our volunteers to be respectful of all people, want to serve and support and be willing to create strong healthy relationships with our youth and young adults.

There is a huge need for volunteers in Pierce county to help construct wheel chair ramps and install grab bars. Our goal is to help seniors stay in their own homes as long as physically possible.  It would be great if you had some knowledge of construction and tools... but not required.

The Volunteer Food Warehouse Assistant helps sort and stock food donations that come in through several community partners which include stores and other warehouses. The main task is to sort and store food items as they come in and make sure they are ready for dispersal into the community via the Food Pantry.

Volunteers are needed to guide guests through the client choice pantry to select the foods most beneficial to their family, sort and weigh donations, stock shelves, and light janitorial. Through the collective work of our amazing volunteers, more than 15,000 families are provided food every year in East Pierce County.

The Team Captain assists Operation Homefront with the delivery of local OH and/or community outreach events by acting as the POC for volunteer groups, whether that group is a corporate partner, a service or family group, or a collection of individuals. The Team Captain receives and disseminates information about local volunteer opportunities, effectively activating his/her respective group. The Team Captain reports to the designee of the Area or Program Manager, communicating how many and which members of the group can attend, and reporting and recording hours after the event. Volunteer at Job Carr Cabin Museum. Saturdays are always fun with visitors of all ages. We are seeking friendly faces to greet museum guests and help them learn about Tacoma's pioneer history. You may also assist with children's crafts and help tourists find their way in Old Town Tacoma. Be a part of bringing Tacoma's birthplace to life!

No need to be a local history expert; we'll give you the tools to succeed! We welcome volunteers of all ages, interests and skill levels. Training and reference materials are provided. You will also have opportunities to assist with a variety of tasks, suited to your skills and interests, that help keep the museum running. Volunteers should be available at least one Saturday per month, but can participate more frequently.

The museum is open W-Sat afternoons and is the visitor center for Old Town, Tacoma. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application form and successfully pass a security background check.

Youth volunteers are welcome at the museum. Teens (15-17) may volunteer with permission from a parent/guardian. Adolescents (10-14) may volunteer if a parent/guardian remains on-site at the Museum to supervise them directly.

The Nisqually Land Trust hosts habitat restoration work parties every Wednesday and occasional Saturdays year-round. We're at various sites throughout the Nisqually River Watershed, from Olympia to Ashford, planting trees, removing invasive species, picking up trash, and much more. It's a great way to experience firsthand the beautiful areas throughout the watershed on Land Trust properties. It's also an awesome way to get some exercise while performing a service for one of the most unique watersheds in Washington State. These projects not only help the ecology of the area, but also improve water quality for salmon and people!

Our volunteer stewards "adopt" one of the Land Trust's properties in the Nisqually River watershed, and periodically monitor it for positive and negative changes, such as: wildlife signs, plant growth and regeneration, signs of trespass, invasive plant species, and many others. There is also the opportunity to do work on the land such as invasive species removal or trash collection as needed.

We ask that you complete at least 4 site visits a year. Once you communicate your interest, we will be in touch further to walk you through picking a site and set up a time to do an on-site orientation.

The Nisqually Land Trust protected areas are along the Nisqually River from the Olympia area to Ashford, WA.

At Lakewold Gardens, our dedicated Docents lead tours on the beautiful grounds of Lakewold while revisiting its rich history with visitors from around the world. You will learn how to conduct a tour and develop your own presentation style. Tours primarily occur during the months of April-September and last approximately 2 hours.

Located in Lakewood, Washington, Lakewold offers landscape architecture by Thomas Church surrounded by rare and native plants, State Champion trees, over 900 rhododendrons, 30 Japanese maples and stunning statuary. We are looking for someone who would be a dedicated photographer of our Capers and sorting parties and other events. We need to keep our website and facebook page up to date with new photos.

We collect donations of clothing and other items. These all need to be sorted by size and suitability. We generally do this as a group on a set date once a month.

Our Ready, Set, Read-Tacoma! program is an early childhood literacy program designed to help prepare children for kindergarten in Tacoma Public Schools. This program is introduces children over the age of 3 to early literacy and STEAM concepts and is offered for free to families with children in the community. Help the program in a variety of ways:

Administrative Assistant: Help our Coordinator with prize distribution, public outreach events, phone calls and data entry. You’d be able to do this at any time, for however long.

Library Assistant: Checking in/out books, reshelving, data entry. You’d set your own times for this task.

We are committed to getting to know each of our volunteers and each of our families through an extensive interview and enrollment process in order to find each participant a great fit. Because we value quality over quantity, we ask that each volunteer comes in with strong communication, and the expectation that it can take several months to be matched with your “Little,” but that it will be worth the wait.

MVCC is committed to helping food insecure children get access to supplemental food items each week.  This position involves putting together bags containing breakfast, lunch, and snack items to be distributed to kids in the FME area over the summer.  Generally between 150-200 bags will be packed during a shift.  Must be able to lift up to 15lbs.

Dogs for Better Lives is in need of volunteer puppy raisers. Volunteer Puppy Raisers open up their homes and hearts to help raise and train future assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Puppy Raisers foster puppies from 8 weeks to 14 months old and attend local training classes in addition to taking the puppy into public for exposure and socialization. Our raisers are provided with training classes and have support all along the way!

No experience needed!  Join our fun staff and other volunteers to help prep, serve, and clean up meals for our guests.  We serve meals 365 days per year at both our Downtown Campus and our Family Shelter.

Volunteer virtually with Little Toasters, a girls’ public speaking program for elementary school students!

It’s one thing to tell a girl she can do anything and a very different to speak to a woman who already is. Normally, we bring in women as guests who are in typically male-dominated fields like legislators, vice presidents of Fortune 500 companies, ER docs, park rangers, etc. On a weekly basis, we will continue to offer this program virtually to support our youth, create normalcy, and maintain their literary and leadership development within this program.

We are looking for speakers to spend time speaking to what they do and what they love about their job, and to listen to the girls talk about their career goals and their own empowerment.

The Bethel Family Center works to support Bethel students, families, and the community by connecting to resources and providing services that can educate, empower, and create new opportunities for individuals. We provide basic needs support, resource and referrals, as well as some direct services. We host a variety of classes and evening events to give our community the opportunity to learn and improve their well being. 

We are looking for individuals who are able to donate a pair of running shoes to a girl in need for our program this Spring. Girls in our program are participating in both King and Pierce County. We will have approximately 800 girls participating in our Spring 2021 season and we want to ensure that any girl who requests a pair of shoes will receive one. All girls deserve well-fitting and comfortable running shoes to safely participate in our program. 

The donation process is simple - you will simply pick out a pair of running shoes online or at your favorite local retailer (think: Super Jock n Jill) and ship the shoes to a Girls on the Run Puget Sound staff member. We will provide you with a specific shoe size to look for and you can do your own shopping :)

Resource Coaches provide support and serve as positive role models in the lives of women who are guest at our shelters. Our guests are returning to the community after incarceration. Mentors are good listeners who maintain regular contact so the guest knows there is someone there on whom they can rely. Resource Mentors also offer practical support by helping participants set goals, map out the week ahead, and locate necessary resources to meet identified goals.

Warehouse Assistants receive inventory and stock donated items of all kinds, including but not limited to food, clothing and dry goods. The Warehouse stocks our Food Bank and is a vital part of providing basic human needs to our clients.

Food Bank Workers keep a consistent flow of goods through the food bank to assure that our clients in need of food are served to the best of our ability. The Food Bank is an important part of our fight to provide basic human needs in the City of Tacoma.

Volunteers are needed at St. Leo's Food Connection to help during the COVID crisis! We need people to...

1. Sort food donations, fill boxes for clients, and distribute food to clients. Shifts are available at these times:

Partial shifts are always welcome!

2. Assist with food pick-ups using St. Leo Food Connection vehicles.

We are in a high risk area as we share a campus with Nativity House (drop-in center and shelter).  We provide gloves (and soon masks), we sanitize regularly, we are limiting the number of clients in the building at one time, and we are implementing 6 foot social distancing.

Volunteers should be between the ages of 18 and 60, in good health, and have no underlying conditions (such as being immunocompromised.)

Please note that the entrance to the Food Connection is off the parking lot in the back of the building.

The Young Adult Shelter at the Beacon Center is seeking volunteers to help prepare and serve meals.

(The shelter also needs donations of food and snacks!)

Volunteers are needed at (approximately) these times every day of the week:

Breakfast: 6AM - 9AM

Brunch/snack: Time TBD

Lunch: 1PM - 4PM

Dinner: 5PM - 8PM

Volunteers must have food handlers cards.

Join our team and make a difference in the lives of participants!

Our Early Stage Memory Loss(ESML) Support Groups provide an invaluable network that people with memory loss can turn to for advice and encouragement to help them feel socially connected and give them a sense of belonging and purpose. Support Group Facilitators create a space for that important interaction by encouraging conversation and maintaining a positive and caring environment.

Our volunteers continuously learn and grow alongside the participants while serving a population in need of great support. “When I began leading the ESML program, I realized that I did carry a stigma based on a fear of not knowing how to interact with people with memory loss and what to expect from them,” said Melinda an ESML Walk Volunteer. “The greatest thing I’ve learned is that people with memory loss are just people. And even though they have memory loss—they’re here. They may not be able to respond to you the way people without memory loss respond, but when they give you a hug, grab your hand, look you in the eye—they’re here.”

Our Chapter's volunteers receive excellent training, ongoing support, resources, and continuing education opportunities.

Individuals who are often best qualified as support group facilitators include: working or retired social workers, nurse and other healthcare professionals, educators, clergy, counselors, and former family caregivers. Commitment of at least one year is required

Many of our special events feature hands-on activities inspired by local history. Depending on the event audience, activities are designed for children and adults. As a volunteer, you will interact with our visitors, assisting them as needed with the activity (theme and craft activity changes with the program).

Celebrate Washington’s role in the space race with these drop-in, family-friendly activities!

Build and test your own spacecraft. Pretend you’re stranded on the moon. Learn about Washington’s many strange connections to space exploration. Then explore the new exhibit A New Moon Rises, featuring dramatic photographs of the moon’s surface.

Our Children's Feeding Programs, including our Backpack Program, works to fight hunger year-round in Pierce County. The Backpack Program gives out food for the weekends every week to over 1,100 students at-risk of going hungry over the weekend. Food packing volunteers help with the initial stages of putting the backpacks together for distribution. We are open for volunteering Monday-Wednesday starting everyday at 10:00AM. We ask that all volunteers be over the age of 16 to come unsupervised, but all ages under 16 are welcome to volunteer with direct supervision by a parent or guardian. Volunteer groups are allowed, but we ask that groups be a maximum of 10 people. A short training/orientation will happen before volunteering. We ask that individuals and groups volunteer with us a minimum of 1.5 hours, so they have time to be oriented, get to know what we do, and enough time to complete a project or help with a food line shift.
