Opportunities From: United Way of Pierce County

Volunteer: Volunteers Needed: In-Home Visits + Yard Care Projects

There are volunteer opportunities for everyone! Join a committee, become a volunteer driver, help out with an event or program, make friendly phone calls and more.

Volunteers needed for in-home visits + yard care projects: Neighbors helping neighbors with basic household tasks, yard work, and friendly visiting. These volunteers go to seniors’ homes and help with various requests such as lawn mowing, vacuuming, and changing light bulbs or fire detector batteries.

Please send Madysen McLain an email at volunteers@themustardseedproject.org to apply!

“It’s a pleasure to be able to help people. Some people that I have driven, I think I was probably their only social contact for the week. It just gives them a contact with the rest of the world, which they won’t necessarily have otherwise. This is important to them and it’s important to me. Someday I may need the use of the service myself. Let’s make sure it works right.”

Jarvis, an 87-year old volunteer driver who has logged more than 40,000 miles with TMSP.

Volunteer: Habitat Restoration Work Parties!

The Nisqually Land Trust hosts habitat restoration work parties every Wednesday and occasional Saturdays year-round. We're at various sites throughout the Nisqually River Watershed, from Olympia to Ashford, planting trees, removing invasive species, picking up trash, and much more. It's a great way to experience firsthand the beautiful areas throughout the watershed on Land Trust properties. It's also an awesome way to get some exercise while performing a service for one of the most unique watersheds in Washington State. These projects not only help the ecology of the area, but also improve water quality for salmon and people!

A comprehensive list of events can be found on our website. Otherwise, any questions can go to our Volunteer Coordinator at emily@nisquallylandtrust.org or (360) 489-3400 x106.

Thanks, and we hope to see you on the land!

Volunteer: Become a Land Trust Site Steward!

Do you have a love for the land, and the plants, animals and the other life it supports? Do you want to help take care of the special places you love? Do you spend your free time romping through the woods looking at plants and insects?

If you answered yes to any of these questions or wish you had, becoming a Site Steward with the Nisqually Land Trust may be a good fit for you! Our volunteer stewards "adopt" one of the Land Trust's properties in the Nisqually River watershed, and periodically monitor it for positive and negative changes, such as: wildlife signs, plant growth and regeneration, signs of trespass, invasive plant species, and many others. There is also the opportunity to do work on the land such as invasive species removal or trash collection as needed.

We ask that you complete at least 4 site visits a year. Once you communicate your interest, we will be in touch further to walk you through picking a site and set up a time to do an on-site orientation.

The Nisqually Land Trust protected areas are along the Nisqually River from the Olympia area to Ashford, WA.

If interested, please contact Emily Simroth at emily@nisquallylandtrust.org.

Boxes/bins and shelving space will be provided for organization and sorting. This will be a direct, in-person service.

Volunteering hours will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hours may change if there are not a lot of clothes in the clothing bank.

Volunteer: Volunteer Mentor

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for volunteer mentors to work with kids ages 6-18 throughout Pierce County. As a volunteer mentor, you will build a unique, 1-to-1 relationship with a young person in your community. As their mentor, you will support their interests by planning outings and sharing experiences such as playing sports, doing creative projects, hiking, or trying out a new recipe together.

But you won’t be on your own—our staff is always available with coaching and resources to spark ideas and navigate relationship development. We provide training, resources, and support, to our mentors throughout the entire match relationship.

Our goal is to support mentor-mentee relationships that will evolve into long-lasting friendships. We are committed to getting to know each of our volunteers and each of our families through an extensive interview and enrollment process in order to find each participant a great fit. Because we value quality over quantity, we ask that each volunteer comes in with strong communication, and the expectation that it can take several months to be matched with your “Little,” but that it will be worth the wait.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is now offering in-person, hybrid, and virtual models for our  matches, and our Match Support team will work with you to create a plan that is best suited to your comfort level and safety needs.

Program Requirements:
1. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
2. We ask for a minimum of a one-year commitment. This begins at the time that you are matched. To be sure a one-year commitment works for you, please consider all that you have done in the last year and whether or not this program is a good fit for your current lifestyle.
3. Matches meet for a minimum of 4 hours per month over the course of 2-4 separate visits throughout the month. This usually breaks down to about 1 hour per week, but can be adjusted to fit your and your mentee's schedule.

Volunteer: Support Families on the Key Peninsula during COVID-19

https://www.childrenshomesociety.org/donate

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many families who were already food-insecure now find themselves with children out of school - children who ordinarily received more than half of their daily nutrition at school through free and reduced-price meals. These families often make trade-offs with other living expenses and employ coping strategies to secure such household items as toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, or disposable diapers CHSW has provided.

Children’s Home Society of Washington is dedicated to helping these families now more than ever.
Consider donating today to support our efforts to help families in need in Key Peninsula.

Suggested Donations:

Fred Meyer, Shell Gas Station, and Key Peninsula Food Market Gift Cards: $25-$100

Diapers sizes 1-6

Baby Wipes

Toilet Paper

Cleaning Supplies

Hand Sanitizer

We will be distributing these resources in compliance with COVID-19 public health recommendations.
To make arrangements for donation drop off: Contact us at 253-884-5433 or email pierce@chs-wa.org

Volunteer: Little Toasters - Volunteer Virtually!

Volunteer virtually with Little Toasters, a girls’ public speaking program for elementary school students!

It’s one thing to tell a girl she can do anything and a very different to speak to a woman who already is. Normally, we bring in women as guests who are in typically male-dominated fields like legislators, vice presidents of Fortune 500 companies, ER docs, park rangers, etc. On a weekly basis, we will continue to offer this program virtually to support our youth, create normalcy, and maintain their literary and leadership development within this program.

We are looking for speakers to spend time speaking to what they do and what they love about their job, and to listen to the girls talk about their career goals and their own empowerment.

For more information, please contact Gina at gina.cabiddu@chs-wa.org

Volunteer: Dental Volunteers Needed at Emergency Dental Clinics

Thank you for your willingness to help care for our neighbors affected by this pandemic.

In response to COVID-19, Medical Teams International has shifted normal operations to focus on two key objectives:

Partner with community health agencies to provide emergency dental drop-in clinics. Use of our mobile clinic vehicles as "support" centers for our partner sites as they conduct drive-thru COVID-19 testing.

With these two objectives in mind, we are in need of volunteers to help support our first focus - that of providing emergency dental drop-in clinics.

We need volunteer dental professionals to provide and support emergency care at each of our clinics. These can be Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, or Dental Students.

As of now, the clinics in Pierce County occur at the following day and time:

These clinics are located at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood and are from 9 am until 3 pm.

Apply today by clicking on the following link:

https://www.cognitoforms.com/MedicalTeamsInternational1/VolunteerApplication.

Select "Mobile Dental" as your area of focus. When it asks if you have already been assigned a clinic, please type in Pierce County.

As you are aware, this is a rapidly changing situation and we may need to either expand or scale down operations as we look at how best to support local health systems and safely serve beneficiaries during this time. We greatly appreciate your willingness, patience, and understanding.

We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy during this time.

Volunteer: Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group Facilitator

“It was an opportunity to interact with people at the same stage I was in and it helped me have a greater understanding that I’m not alone. And I don’t feel alone anymore.”

-ESML Program Participant

Join our team and make a difference in the lives of participants!

Our Early Stage Memory Loss(ESML) Support Groups provide an invaluable network that people with memory loss can turn to for advice and encouragement to help them feel socially connected and give them a sense of belonging and purpose. Support Group Facilitators create a space for that important interaction by encouraging conversation and maintaining a positive and caring environment.

Our volunteers continuously learn and grow alongside the participants while serving a population in need of great support. “When I began leading the ESML program, I realized that I did carry a stigma based on a fear of not knowing how to interact with people with memory loss and what to expect from them,” said Melinda an ESML Walk Volunteer. “The greatest thing I’ve learned is that people with memory loss are just people. And even though they have memory loss—they’re here. They may not be able to respond to you the way people without memory loss respond, but when they give you a hug, grab your hand, look you in the eye—they’re here.”

Our Chapter's volunteers receive excellent training, ongoing support, resources, and continuing education opportunities.

Volunteer: St. Leo Backpack Program: Food Packer

Our Children's Feeding Programs, including our Backpack Program, works to fight hunger year-round in Pierce County. The Backpack Program gives out food for the weekends every week to over 1,100 students at-risk of going hungry over the weekend. Food packing volunteers help with the initial stages of putting the backpacks together for distribution. We are open for volunteering Monday-Wednesday starting everyday at 10:00AM. We ask that all volunteers be over the age of 16 to come unsupervised, but all ages under 16 are welcome to volunteer with direct supervision by a parent or guardian. Volunteer groups are allowed, but we ask that groups be a maximum of 10 people. A short training/orientation will happen before volunteering. We ask that individuals and groups volunteer with us a minimum of 1.5 hours, so they have time to be oriented, get to know what we do, and enough time to complete a project or help with a food line shift.

Volunteer: Reading Tutor

Be a reading tutor at TAP!

The Trinity Afterschool Program is a reading intervention program for students in 1st-2nd grade.  Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45, we need YOU to work one-on-one with students through our curriculum to help them learn to read!

Students who can read at grade level by third grade are 80% more likely to graduate high school by age 19. That is a HUGE deal!

This 1 hour commitment makes a huge impact!  Tutors often have the privilege of watching students move from hardly knowing their letter sounds, to reading books after only a few months.  That kind of progress cannot be made without your help.

Our tutors range from middle-school students to retired teachers.  The curriculum does the work for you: we just need your heart for kids! We have extra need for tutors on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please reach out if you are interested!

Volunteer: Folk Musicians

Help us bring Tacoma’s birthplace to life through interactive learning for elementary students and our community. Musical performers showcase songs that interpret life on the Oregon Trail and in Puget Sound during the mid-1800s.

Job Carr Cabin Museum hosts over 40 school groups each year. We rely on musical performers to engage elementary school children in learning about frontier life. Musicians may choose to incorporate singing, storytelling, circle dancing, square dancing and/or folk dance. Museum staff can assist with research and reference materials. Other performers have used guitar, ukulele, mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle, harmonica and/or drums.

School field trip presentations are generally scheduled on weekday mornings. Special events are usually scheduled during afternoons, evenings and weekends. Performance times vary from 15min to 2hrs. Multiple opportunities are available.

We welcome volunteers of all ages, interests and skill levels. Volunteers with experience in music, theater, education, teaching, history, and storytelling are strongly encouraged to apply. Stipends may be available. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application form and successfully pass a security background check.

Volunteer: Harvest Leader

Harvest Leaders are the point person leading volunteers on urban fruit harvests and organizing logistics like food bank drop off and record keeping. Since all volunteers get to take home a portion of the harvest, Harvest Leaders have access to fresh fruit all season long. This is the perfect opportunity for people who like to preserve food and who want to give back to the community. Becoming a Harvest Leader is a way to meet new friends and gain experience leading small groups. All Harvest Leaders receive training from Harvest Pierce County staff in early summer.

We need Coordinators in North/West End Tacoma, Gig Harbor, South Tacoma, Eastside/South End Tacoma, Central/Hilltop Tacoma, Parkland/Spanaway, University Place/Fircrest, Lakewood/Steilacoom, Puyallup, and other locations.

Coordinators commit to lead a weekly harvest on a consistent day (which may include multiple sites), commit to the entire season (July through mid-October with fall months being the busiest), record all harvest details and help orient volunteers on site, bring equipment for harvests and deliver fruit to food banks.

Coordinators must be organized and independent workers, able to problem solve and alter plans as needed, flexible, and able to respond to emails and phone messages in a timely manner.

Reliable transportation to transport equipment and fruit is necessary for the position. We will reimburse your mileage. Vehicles need the ability to transport a 6-8 foot ladder. However, if you do not have a vehicle or it cannot transport a ladder, we have a van that you can likely use for the duration of fruit harvesting.

Mileage reimbursement and $100 stipend provided. Fruit Scouts should be prepared to commit to at least three hours per week. Additional training may be required. To apply, please contact Harvest Pierce County.

Volunteer: Veggie Co-op Farm Team Member

The Veggie Co-op is a volunteer-run program managed by the Pierce Conservation District (PCD) through its program Harvest Pierce County that coordinates individuals to come together as a community to grow food on a farm scale on land provided by the Franklin Pierce School District on E 96th and Waller Road in Tacoma, WA. Volunteers attend weekly work parties where they work, grow, and learn as a group, instead of stewarding rows individually as typical in most community gardens. The produce is divided 50/50 among emergency food sites and volunteers. Veggie Co-op is a free program and is open to all participants.

Volunteers ages 15 and under should be accompanied by a parent. The minimum requirement is 3 hours per week. Work parties are 3 hours long and offered several times a week. Typically the work parties happen in the morning hours to avoid working the hottest part of the day. Contact the Program Coordinator for the current work party times. Veggie Co-op runs from February-November annually, and volunteers are expected to commit to the season but are welcome to take up to 5 weeks off. Volunteer groups are allowed, but request no more than 15 per group. The registration period for Veggie Co-op is December 15th through January 31st, and then there will be volunteer orientations in February. Once someone registers they will be contacted about the dates of these orientation sessions if they would like to attend weekly work parties. If a group would like to volunteer with us for a one off event, then they will be trained by staff on site. More information: http://piercecd.org/276/Veggie-Co-op
