Our docents are friendly ambassadors who can effectively engage children and families in conversation and answer questions. We'll provide you with training and reference materials to help you learn how to describe Museum exhibits and artifacts, relate the history of Job Carr and Old Town, and provide information about the Oregon Trail and life in early Tacoma. We welcome volunteers of all ages, interests and skill level. You must have excellent communication and customer service skills, with an enthusiasm for local history. Volunteers must be reliable and available for at least one shift per month. The Museum is currently open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm in Old Town, Tacoma. All volunteers must successfully pass a security background check. This volunteer is needed 3-5 days per month, September through June. Scheduling is flexible.

Job Carr Cabin Museum hosts over 40 school groups each year. We rely on musical performers to engage elementary school children in learning about frontier life. Musicians may choose to incorporate singing, storytelling, circle dancing, square dancing and/or folk dance. Museum staff can assist with research and reference materials. Other performers have used guitar, ukulele, mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle, harmonica and/or drums.
School field trip presentations are generally scheduled on weekday mornings. Special events are usually scheduled during afternoons, evenings and weekends. Performance times vary from 15min to 2hrs. Multiple opportunities are available.
