It's Hunger Action Month!
This September, every action―big or small―is one step closer to an America where no one is hungry. Your voice, your actions and your commitment are critical in the movement to end hunger. When people are fed, futures are nourished. With access to nutritious foods, we can all reach our full potential.
Last year, 1 in 6 people in Pierce County were at risk of hunger, but the economic and housing crises have caused the number of households accessing emergency feeding programs to increase dramatically.
Facts about hunger in our community
- Many of the families visiting local food banks work part-time or full-time jobs; however, low wages, underemployment and a high cost of living prevent families from being able to meet their basic needs.
- Hunger deprives our kids of more than just food. A child's chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough food to eat today. This is particularly difficult during weekends, school breaks and summer months when free school meals are not available.
- As our population ages, hunger pains grow. The rate of hunger among older adults (60 and older) has increased by 38% since 2001. The pandemic increased this risk, as many high-risk individuals feared going out to food banks and grocery stores.
